    • Decomposition and nutrient dynamics of marsh litter in the Sanjiang Plain, Northeast China

      Abstract:The litterbag technique was used to study the decomposition and nutrient dynamics of marsh litter in the four communities, Carex pseudocuraica (C.pa), C. lasiocarpa (C.la), Deyeuxia angustifolia (D.aa), and D. angustifolia-Shrub (D.aa-Srb), in Sanjiang Plain, Northeast China. Decomposition was divided into two periods in the first year, with the mass loss ranging from 11.7% to 31.4% of the initial mass during summer and autumn, accounting for more than 75% of the annual loss. The decomposition rates ranged from 0.000 612 to 0.000 945 d-1 depending on the depth of the flooding and its duration, and differed significantly in each community. The litter decomposed faster in communities with deeper and perennial flooding than in those with shallow and seasonal flooding. The initial ratios of C:N and C:P were also different among the four litter types, but these differences had no impact on the decomposition rates, suggesting that the main factor influencing the decomposition rates of marsh litter was the flooding status rather than the litter quality. The N concentrations in C.pa and C.la almost continuously increased over time, with their final values being 2.8 and 2.4 times higher than the initial ones, respectively. However, the nutrient dynamics in D.aa and D.aa-Srb offered another pattern, sharply falling in the first month and then gradually rising, with the values at the end of the experiment being close to those at the beginning. The litter accumulated substantial amounts of N in C.pa and C.la, while net N release from the litter was observed in both D.aa and D.aa-Srb. The difference may be caused by microorganisms' demand for nutrition, and then limited by the C:N ratios of litter and the availability of nitrogen from the soil and marsh water. In contrast with N dynamics, P concentrations of all the litter types apparently decreased during the first month, and then continued to decline in C.pa, remained constant in C.la and D.aa and increased slightly in D.aa-Srb. At the end of the experiment, the P concentrations decreased, respectively, by 56%, -5%, 47% and 24% of the initial values of C.la, C. pa, D.aa and D.aa-Srb. The net P release was observed in all marsh litter over 480 days of decomposition and the intensity of the P release was different amongst communities, which may be regulated by ratios of initial C:P. The results suggested that in the marsh with the N limitation, litter tended to accumulate N and release P during decomposition and the intensity of accumulation or release was closely related to the initial C:N and C:P ratios.

    • Estimation of evaporation rate from soil surface using stable isotopic composition of throughfall and stream water in a tropical seasonal rain forest of Xishuangbanna, Southwest China

      Abstract:Xishuangbanna is located at the northern edge of the distribution of tropical forests in Southeast Asia, and it has a very high frequency of radiation fog, especially during the dry season (November-April). In this study, rainwater, throughfall, intercepted fog water (fog drip) by forest canopy, and stream water were collected in January 2002 and December 2003 for stable isotopic analysis at a tropical seasonal rain forest site in Xishuangbanna, Southwest China. The objective of the study is to estimate the evaporation rate from the forest floor. The stable hydrogen (δD) and oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) of rainwater, throughfall, fog drip, and stream water was determined using an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. Stream water during the non-storm runoff period was considered to reflect the effect of evaporation from the forest floor. The evaporation rates from the forest floor were estimated using isotope composition values in stream water and the total throughfall was estimated using the Rayleigh distillation equation under equilibrium conditions. The results indicated that the annual weighted means of δD and δ18O in fog drip were consistently more enriched than those of rainwater and stream water, and the fog drip was thought to contain water that had evaporated and recycled. The weighted means of δD and δ18O in stream water during the non-storm runoff period were 5.69% and 0.39% more enriched than those of the total throughfall (rain throughfall fog drip) in 2002, while in 2003 these were 5.05% and 0.28%, respectively. Evapotranspiration in the humid year 2002 and the dry year 2003, computed from the water balance, was 1186 mm and 987 mm, respectively, which was quite low when compared with the values reported in some humid tropical forests. Consequently, the evaporation rate from the forest floor was 5.1% of the evapotranspiration in 2002, and 3.1% in 2003. The lower evaporation rate was thought to be mainly a result of the influence of the high frequency of heavy radiation fog on the rain forest during the night in the dry season (November-April).

    • RAPD diversity of Stipa grandis populations and its relationship with some ecological factors

      Abstract:The genetic diversity of Stipa grandis P.Smirn and its relationship with the climatic variables were studied using the RAPD technique for 90 genes from five natural populations sampled in the Xilingol steppe, China. Sixteen oligonucleotides screened from 100 random primers were used to amplify 310 trackable RAPD loci, which were all polymorphic. By analyzing the RAPD data using POPGENE software, different geographic S. grandis populations were studied, which indicated a high level of genetic diversity, and the maximum variation was observed within the populations with a 28% variation observed among the populations. Using Pearson correlation analysis, significant (P < 0.05) or highly significant (P < 0.01) relationships were found between gene diversity indexes and temperature factors (≥10C cumulative temperature in a year, annual mean temperature and mean temperature in January). Mantel's tests showed that there was no significant correlation between Nei's unbiased genetic distance and the geographic distance of S. grandis populations (r = 0.184, P = 0.261). However, there were significant or highly significant correlations between Nei's genetic distance and the several climatic divergences in pairwise S. grandis populations. All results indicated that natural selection resulting from variations in water and temperature was responsible for the adaptive eco-geographical differentiation indicated by the RAPD markers of different S. grandis populations, and that immigration and gene drift did not play an important role in affecting the differentiation of S. grandis populations.

    • Carbon accumulation and distribution in Pinus massoniana and Cunninghamia lanceolata mixed forest ecosystem in Daqingshan, Guangxi, China

      Abstract:Carbon accumulation and distribution were studied at three sampling plots in a 13-year-old mixed planatation of Pinus massoniana and Cunninghamia lanceolata in Daqingshan, Guangxi, China. The results showed that carbon content varied with tissues and tree species, but the total carbon content of Pinus massoniana was higher than that of Cunninghamia lanceolata. The average tissue carbon contents of Pinus massoniana were: wood (58.6%) > root (56.3%) > branch (51.2%) > bark (49.8%) > leaf (46.8%), while those of Cunninghamia lanceolata were: bark (52.2%) > leaf (51.8%) > wood (50.2%) > root (47.5%) > branch (46.7%). The carbon contents of the soil (at a depth of 60cm) ranged from 1.45% to 1.84% with an average of 1.70%. Carbon contents were higher in the surface soil (0–20cm) than in the deep layer (below 20cm). The average carbon contents were the highest for trees (51.1%), followed by litter (48.3%), shrubs (44.1%), and herbs (33.0%). The biomass of the trees in the three plots ranged from 85.35 t hm-2 to 101.35 t hm-2 with an average of 93.83 t hm-2, in which 75.7%–82.6% was Pinus massoniana. The biomass of the understory was 2.10–3.95 t hm-2 with an average of 2.72 t hm-2, while the standing stock of ground litter was 5.49–7.91 t hm-2 with an average of 6.75 t hm-2. The carbon storage in the mixed plantation reached the maximum in the soil layer (69.02%), followed by vegetation (29.03%), and standing litter (1.82%). The carbon storage in the tree layer occupied 23.90% of the total ecosystem and 97.7% of the vegetation layer. Pinus massoniana accounted for 65.39% of the total carbon storage in the tree layer. Tissue carbon storage was directly related to the corresponding amount of biomass. Trunks had the highest carbon storage, accounting for 53.23% of the trees in Pinus massoniana and 55.57% in Cunninghamia lanceolata, respectively. Roots accounted for about 19.22% of the total tree carbon. The annual net productivity of the mixed plantation was 11.46 t hm-2a-1, and that of sequestered carbon was 5.96 t hm-2a-1, which was equivalent to fixing CO2 of 21.88 t hm-2a-1. The plantation was found to be an important sink of atmospheric CO2.

    • Effects of the infestation by Actinote thalia pyrrha (Fabricius) on the physiological indexes of Mikania micrantha leaves

      Abstract:Mikania micrantha is a dangerous exotic weed now found throughout Guangdong Province, China. Introduced by the Indonesian Oil Palm Institute, lepidopteran defoliator Actinote thalia pyrrha (Fabricius) is a potential biological control factor for M. micrantha. Changes in the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), polyphenoldoxidase (PPO), the total phenolics content, and the capacity of scavenging 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydazyl (DPPH) free radicals in M. micrantha leaves were analyzed after infestation by A. thalia pyrrha larvae. The results showed that a slight change of all the indexes in the damaged leaves appeared within 3 h. After four days of infestation by A. thalia pyrrha , SOD and POD activities in the damaged leaves were higher than those of the control. But CAT activity was lower than that of the control, indicating that the SOD and POD functions were impeded more than those of CAT. The SOD and POD activities reached their highest values after 48 h of infestation by A. thalia pyrrha and then decreased, whereas the highest activity of CAT occurred after 24 h and then decreased. PPO activity fluctuated greatly with its three peak values being 1.83, 1.92, and 2.17 times that of the control. The total phenolics content increased initially and then decreased after 72 h of infestation by A. thalia pyrrha . The capacity of scavenging DPPH was significantly lower than that of the control (p<0.05). SOD activity positively correlated with CAT and POD activities for both damaged and normal leaves. However, the value of the correlation coefficient in the damaged leaves was higher than that in the normal leaves. The total phenolics content also showed a weak positive correlation with PPO activity. It is suggested that the protective response of M. micrantha to infestation by A. thalia pyrrha was short and limited, but resulted in a reduced function of the leaves, disturbed the metabolism in the protective enzyme system, and decreased the antioxidative capacity. M. micrantha was unable to resist the feeding stress by altering the content of the total phenolics.
