The 7th plenary session of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) was held in Paris, France, from April 29 to May 4, 2019. The session approved the IPBES Global Assessment Report, this report indicated that “transformative changes” will be required to protect and restore nature from the current global challenges of unprecedented natural recession and accelerated rate of species extinction. The IPBES released a summary of the report on May 6, 2019. The core content includes (1) nature and its important contributions to humanity; (2) direct and indirect driver analysis; (3) global goals and policy options; and (4) policy tools, options, and best practices. The IPBES Global Assessment Report provides the following insights for research in the field of ecosystem services and sustainable development in China: (1) systematic assessment of the status of biodiversity and ecosystem conservation in China; (2) exploration of transformative programs to promote sustainable development in China; and (3) strengthening higher education and public publicity for sustainable development.
