Abstract:Forest resources comprise an important ecological asset supporting human society. Exploring valuation methods for ecological assets found in forests is of great significance to the rational use and effective protection of natural resources. In this paper, the Net Present Value Method was used to estimate the value of ecological assets in Chinese forests. We found that the total value of China's forest ecological assets is CNY 698.5 trillion (USD 104.5 trillion), which includes direct value and indirect value. The direct value is CNY 7.5 trillion (USD 1.1 trillion) including stumpage value CNY 4.5 trillion (0.6 trillion USD) and forest products value CNY 3.0 trillion (USD 0.4 trillion). The indirect value is CNY 691 trillion (103.4 trillion USD) including climate regulation value, water conservation value, carbon sequestration value, and so on. The climate regulation and water conservation values account for 48% and 27% of the forest assets' indirect value respectively. The value of forest ecological asset in Guangxi Province, Guangdong Province, and Yunnan Province account for 10%, 9%, and 9% of the China forest asset value, respectively, which are among the highest proportions in the whole country. Hainan Province, Zhejiang Province, and Guangdong Province have high value densities at about CNY 9.5 million/m2 (USD 1.4 million/m2), CNY 9.1 million/m2 (USD 1.4 million/m2) and CNY 8.8 million/m2 (USD 1.3 million/m2) respectively. Due to the ecological asset concept, the evaluation index and method are not unified, and the valuation results are quite different. Therefore, it is necessary to assess China's forest ecological asset value comprehensively.
