Abstract:By using all the published academic papers on Aulacoseira and Melosira known from the Web of Science (Thomson Reuters), we performed a bibliometric analysis of the literature for the past 40 years. The number of published papers shows a clear, year-on-year upward trend, but the rate of this increase remains modest. Similarly, the number of authors per article also increased gradually, reaching slightly more than four authors per article in the past 5-year period. Generally, such research has been published in journals with moderate or low-impact factor scores, which is often associated with having a weaker academic influence. Taken together, our analysis suggests that this particular direction of research is currently unpopular. To date, the largest contribution to the number of academic papers is from Western countries, which collectively maintain a leading position in international collaborations in this field. The research content remains focused on fundamental questions; namely, on the taxonomy, diversity, and population ecology of Aulacoseira and Melosira. Thus far, freshwater lakes and river basins are the main habitats of interest in the published studies.
