The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) was set up for the goal of "strengthening the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development". Initiated in 2012, IPBES has been evolved from a conceptual framework of work into a solid institutional platform marked with its work plan 2014-2018. IPBES has 4 main objectives supported with expected outputs. The outputs of IPBES will be a series of thematic assessment reports to explore new issues in the fields and to support the implementation of the biodiversity conservation related to international conventions, and guide the policy formulations at international, regional and national levels. At the same time, IPBES's comprehensive assessment reports at regional and global level will demonstrate challenges in biodiversity conservation to the general public, media and governments, which will further drive the policies into a biodiversity conservation friendly practices. Therefore, IPBES is an important platform to provide knowledge to support biodiversity conservation. China, as an important member in IPBES and activities related to international biodiversity conventions, should adopt a concrete and comprehensive national strategy to the relatively international process and negotiations. Meanwhile, Chinese government should encourage policy-sensitive scientists to participate the IPBES' scientific activities to make our contribution to the global efforts and ensure the security of our national benefits.
