Abstract:The international conference ”Planet Under Pressure 2012——New Knowledge Towards Solutions” was held on 26th – 29th March in London. Scientists from more than 100 countries got together to discusse new solutions to reduce the pressure the earth is under and to support valuable suggestions to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio 20. In the conference, researches on food security mainly discussed the factors that affect the global food security, including climate change, urbanization, globalization, population growth, diseases, food structure, the level of economic development and others. Further more, scientists put forward possible approaches to achieve food security, which contains expanding the areas of high quality arable land, developing householder farming and genetic agriculture, improving the level of agricultural informatization and the implement of reasonable policies. The conference has three characteristics: (1) information community of multi-scales and multi-fields; (2) the proposition of new ideas; (3) emphasis of the combination of science and policy. We can learn from the four aspects: (1) strengthen the combination of multi-disciplines, and develop new research area, and put forward new ideas; (2) consider issues entirely and combine theory and practice effectively; (3) strengthen the communication of the government and scientists; (4) enhance international vision, strengthen global research, improve the participation in global initiative and enthusiasm of the activity.
