Abstract:The mountain-basin system (MBS) is composed of two subsystems, altitudinal belt of montane vegetation and cycles of horizontal vegetative belt in basin. Huailai MBS, Hebei Province lying in farming-pastoral zone of North China, is one of the typical MBS physiognomy. It was chosen as our case study area to establish an optimized eco-productive paradigm. In the hope of realizing ecological restoration and agriculture sustainable development, a “Intermontane basin-Low mountain and hill- Mid-mountain” eco-productive paradigm of Huailai MBS was established through the evaluation and analysis on the local eco-economic situation, the agricultural structure adjusting and optimized landuse structure. Huailai MBS contains three “circles”: intermontane basin, low mountain and hill, mid-mountain, including five functional belts, viz. Guanting Reservoir, protective belt surrounding reservoir, high efficient agri-economic belt in river valley plain, raising livestock in sty and artificial woods (fruit tree)-shrub-grass belt in low mountain and hill, and forest-shrub-grass ecological conservation belt in mid-mountain.
