The root development characteristics of spring maize and its relation to the canopy growth were analyzed based on field observed data.Equations were derived to quantify their relationships.The water effect on root growth was described in details.Methods to determine the irrigation wetting depth and to control the root to canopy ratio were developed according to rooting depth.This is quite helpful to the irrigation planning.
